Feeling Lost with All the Dog Collar Options?
If you thought shopping for your clothes was hard, welcome to the vast world of dog collars. Before you splurge on the first collar that tickles your fancy, we recommend laying down some ground rules. Let us give you our checklist for choosing the best collar for your bestie and our breakdown of the pros and cons of the most common dog collar types. Our Dog Collar Checklist
Before you become too attached to a particular dog collar, let’s be practical for a minute. Does the dog collar you like pass these basic checks?
- Fully adjustable with either a buckle or clip
- Waterproof
- Easy to clean
- Won’t fray from regular use
- No accessories like bows that can irritate and cause rashes
- The style and colour suit your dog
- The fit is right for your pup (see our post on How to Fit a Dog Collar the Right Way)
Tip: If the dog collar you like fails any one of these checks, then give it a miss. Your furry friend will wear their dog collar every day, so you need to prioritise your pup’s needs and comfort.
Should I Choose a Collar with a Buckle or Clip?
Yonder Dog always recommends a buckle collar to pup parents as a safer and more reliable option. Dog collars that have a buckle adjustment are more secure and less likely to come undone if your dog is highly active, pulls on the leash, or loves to roll.
Clips on collars are known to accidentally open if they are cheaply made or worn down from daily use. While clips are more convenient and have more flexible adjustment options, dog collars with buckles are far more durable and can withstand more wear and tear.
Tip: We don’t suggest choosing a clip dog collar if your furry buddy has a long coat. You will forever be battling against their fur and trying not to catch clumps of their coat in the clip! We know from personal experience that this isn’t going to be fun for you or your pup, who’s probably going to have a personal grudge against that collar for life.
PVC Dog Collars
Pros
PVC dog collars are an underrated legend in the dog accessory world. They are everything you want in a dog collar wrapped up in a designer-look package. Dog collars made of PVC material come in seriously stunning colours for those luxury pups who want to look the part. Even against sharp puppy teeth, PVC dog gear is durable but flexible. PVC dog collars are waterproof, odour-resistant, and oh-so-easy to clean with a simple wipe-down — no more hanging the collar out to dry after walkies in the rain!
Being a lightweight and hypoallergenic material, PVC is a comfier choice for pups with sensitive skin. PVC even feels nice against YOUR skin when you match your PVC dog collar with a stylish colour-coordinated lead.
Cons
Like most materials, PVC collars don’t last forever, so make sure you give your pup AND their collar the care they deserve. To avoid colours from fading, keep PVC dog collars away from prolonged, strong direct sunlight and hot surfaces. We recommend a light clean with a wet wipe or with warm, soapy water for a deeper clean.
Care Tip: Always completely dry your pup under their PVC dog collar after a wash or waterplay.
Summary: PVC collars are functional and fashionable with only basic care requirements.
Nylon Dog Collars
Pros
When perusing any physical pet store, you’ll notice that 80% of the dog collars are made from nylon. Nylon dominates the shelves due to its popularity, affordability, lightweight feel, and relative durability. Plus, the endless nylon colour and pattern choices make it an obvious choice for some pup parents.
Cons
The popular nylon collar has its downfalls. The material is less breathable and therefore retains odour for long periods of time. So if you’ve been to the beach or if your dog has rolled in something unsavoury. . . that smell will come home with them.
Nylon collars are not waterproof and will start to look frayed and dirty in a matter of months – depending on the intensity of your pup’s fitness regime. You also risk causing rashes and irritation for your pooch due to the rougher texture of nylon against their skin.
Summary: Nylon collars are affordable and come in a wide variety of styles, but you will need to spend more time washing and cleaning them because they retain dirt and odour.
Leather Dog Collars
Pros
Leather dog collars are your ticket for maximum durability and comfort, as the leather naturally softens with use. Leather dog collars have a timeless, classic style that makes even the craziest pups look seriously sophisticated.
Cons
Be warned: The classic leather style has a price tag that may not fit within your pet budget. Leather is a high-maintenance material that requires regular care to stay in good condition. As a porous material, leather can easily absorb water and moisture, causing damage to your pup’s collar if they’re walking in the rain or swimming at the beach. Leather also stains easily, and dark oil, dirt, or food stains (especially on lighter leather shades) can be a nightmare to remove.
Tip: Expose your dog to a sample of leather before buying them a leather collar. Some pups go crazy for the smell of leather and will stop at nothing to have a nibble. Some dogs are even allergic to leather.
Summary: A leather dog collar will look and feel fantastic, but it will be more expensive and need high maintenance care.
Chain Dog Collars
Pros
Chain collars are chew-proof and super easy to clean. They are also the most durable, and they will handle everyday wear and tear like no other material. Chain collars are an aesthetic choice for pup parents who don’t want the ‘adorable dog’ look.
Cons
Make sure your dog doesn’t get the chance to chew on their chain collar, as the links in the chain can damage their teeth and gums. The links can also catch on fur and other household furniture, creating a choking hazard. You will need to actively dry their chain collar after it gets wet and wash it after salty beach adventures to prevent it from rusting.
Tip: If your pup is a beach lover, we recommend choosing a PVC collar that you can easily wipe down after a wet, sandy beach play.
We don’t suggest choosing a chain collar if you live in an area exposed to extreme temperatures, as chain dog collars absorb heat and can become dangerously hot to touch. Likewise, the metal can cool and cause discomfort for your bestie. Imagine wearing a necklace that’s been in the freezer!
Tip: Chain collars are heavier, so we recommend waiting until your puppy is older and stronger before giving them one.
Summary: A chain collar is seriously durable but isn’t as comfy for your pooch and will need attention after water play to avoid rusting.
